I love breakfast places.

Two of my favorite restaurants where I grew up in Monterey, CA are breakfast places – The Breakfast Club and First Awakenings. We have moved around several times and I have yet to find a restaurant similar to these, until about 2 years ago.

First Watch, located on Main Street, in Fairfax, VA comes very close to the California Breakfast Experience. The eclectic menu offers such choices as Acapulco Express Omelette with chorizo sausage, avocado, green chilies and house-roasted onions, and Casa Frittata with roasted tomatoes, spinach, herbed goat cheese and sliced sausage.

I ordered what I normally order – Eggs Benedict Florentine with spinach, avocado and tomato. My husband, too, ordered what he normally gets – Chickichanga, a version of chimichanga but with chicken, chorizo sausages, green chilies and avocado topped with cheeses and Vera Cruz sauce.

The food was great like always, but today was different. We just dropped off our 3rd grader and saddest thing of all – my baby boy, my sweet sweet sweet sweet son, whose last 5 years sped by like it was 5 minutes, whom I love more than anything – was going to have his first day of kindergarten today! He has never been away from me for more than a few hours, and today and every day for the next 9 months, he would be away from me for about 8 hours. I needed to drown my sorrow in Eggs Benedict Florentine ASAP.
